Reasons Start-ups Succeed

There’s no doubt about it: startups are hard and they’re risky. In fact, on average, 9 out of 10 startups will go out of business. Although founding a startup is inherently risky, there are a few things that can increase your chances of success. American investor Bill Gross conducted a famous speech at Ted Talk, where he talked about what he learned from the data he gathered from hundreds of companies

The Three Most Important Factors

Timing

Above all else, the most important thing is timing! It actually accounts for 42% of the differences between success and failure for startups. Success is dependent on whether people need or want your product. If you enter the market when there won’t be demand, you won’t make any sales. So before you anything else, be honest with yourself and truly assess whether the world is ready for or in need of your product.

After timing, the team and idea behind a startup are the second and third most impactful factors (accounting for 32% and 28% of differences between success and failure, respectively).

The Team

Your team should be a communicative and complementary group with the necessary knowledge, skills, determination, passion, and willingness to work. The leader should have the social ability to network, build partnerships, seek out investors and other funding sources, talk to the press, and recruit and inspire workers. As startups don’t typically have large teams, the employees you choose are important.

The Idea

The product itself must also be based on a strong idea and executed well. While the product doesn’t have to be entirely unique or the first of its kind, it does need to differentiate itself from other products in some aspect or another and it shouldn’t enter the market after it is already saturated with similar products. Ideally, you want your product to be so appealing and interesting that people will want to talk about it and, in a way, advertise by word of mouth for you.

Other Important Factors

Commitment

If you are going into a startup, you have to be passionate about it and love the work. After all, you are embarking on an uncertain journey. If you aren’t passionate about it, how can you put in the necessary time and effort to make it all work. You must be determined and refuse to give up when things get difficult or you face challenges. At the same time, you must also believe in your startup. If you don’t believe in it yourself, you can’t expect others to do so. Additionally, to succeed, you need to make profit which won’t happen if you don’t take risks. And you won’t take risks if you don’t believe in yourself and your startup.

A Well-Defined Vision

With startups, you need a well-defined vision; it’s best to have an idea of where your business is headed from the get-go. One of the biggest things is to have a sensible business model and financial plan. Not running out of money is crucial to your startup actually functioning so have a plan that includes a budget and how to raise funds. Second, as a startup you will almost certainly have limited staff and resources. This means you’ll need to figure out how to be productive and know what to prioritise.

Adaptability

Successful entrepreneurs know when to shift their plans a little. It’s important to observe what is working for both yourself and your competitors, to listen to feedback, and to learn from your mistakes. When things aren’t going quite as well as you’d like or you see opportunity for improvement, adapt and make the changes you need to make!

Mentorship

If possible, having a good mentor to guide you can make a world of difference. Mentors have gone through the process themselves and often experienced similar, if not the same, challenges. This can make their advice an invaluable resource when you find yourself in a tough spot or are unsure of what to do.

Adaptability

The idea

The Team

Timing

How successful online businesses stand out in highly competitive markets

It’s a crowded market out there, and if you’re an online entrepreneur, you may be wondering how you can possibly make your product or service stand out from all your competitors’. While it may seem like a difficult goal to achieve, there are a few things you can do to turn it to reality.

What Makes You Different?

Before you even start, make sure to choose an optimal product or service. When trying to decide on what you will sell, think of problems your customers have and figure out how to address them. If applicable, you should also take a look at your competitors and determine what they are missing, then fill that missing niche. Whatever way you decide to make yourself different, make it your brand.

Aside from solving a previously unaddressed issue or simply creating a better product, you can also get a little more creative in how you differentiate your brand. For example, make free one-day shipping, a lifetime warranty, or other appealing guarantees a part of your business model. You must be able to back up any offers though. Another idea is to found a startup with a cause marketing effort and make giving back to your community or a charity a pillar of your business. This method may require a large change in your business model, however, if it was not part of your original plan.

Being Honest

Be honest to your customers about your products and services. If you feel the need to exaggerate about your product’s quality, there is an issue. Instead of making things up (that end to come out in the end anyways), work towards improving and accomplishing things that you can actually brag about. Similarly, admit and mistakes you make and try to fix them quickly. Owning up to an issue and correcting it can turn a bad experience into a good one, and customers remember experiences so this is an important effort to make.

Having a Strong Online Presence

We have already posted an article that goes into greater depth on this topic, but having a strong online presence can make a world of difference for your online business.

The first step is to have your own website. Ideally, it should be simple so people can absorb information quickly and easily, as well as pleasing to the eye. Investing time and effort to ensure it is mobile friendly also means a larger audience will be able to properly view your site. Posting high quality content is another very important requirement. Consider posting on a blog too if you want more web traffic. Education content will win your business favor and reputation, and entertaining content will similarly attract readers. However, promotional content will turn people off. Lastly, pay attention to SEO.

Beyond your own website, you should aim to grow your online presence in other ways. You can try to get yourself featured on other websites. This will help you gain exposure with a new audience and increase your credibility. If possible, having others endorse or positively review your product will help boost its popularity. Another method is to become an online resource. Participate in chat forums answering questions and responding to comments. Lastly, make sure to be active on social media! Social media is an easy way to become a part of people’s everyday lives. On social media, you can interact with customers, post content, and market your brand. Just make sure to tailor your business’s social media persona to appeal to your target audience.

Customer Service

Customer service is another factor that matters heavily to customers. In fact, about 75% of customers in one survey said that they consider customer service a test of a company’s competency. If your customer service is notable, that’s an instant plus for your business and it’ll help you stand out. As a testament to just how much customer service matters to buys, 73% of respondents in a PwC survey said it was an important determinant in their purchasing decisions. The same survey also found consumers are willing to pay up to 16% more for a superior experience and will be more loyal to brands that provide them.

Always Making an Effort to Improve

Once you have a plan, it’s good to stick to it. But, nonetheless, be willing to change it if you see the opportunity for improvement. Keep yourself informed about new developments in your field and be sure to stay on the cutting edge. Produce new and improved products as your company grows, and as you always want something to differentiate yourself, be willing to adapt and change if increased competition means you are no longer unique.

How to Plan and Manage an Event

1. Work with a Team

Planning and managing an event can be a large task, and it inevitably requires a lot of commitment, both in terms of effort and time. This is especially true for larger events. Rather than leaving the planning all to one person, try to organize a group of people who can work together, dividing up the responsibilities amongst themselves. Just make sure that everyone in the event planning group communicates well throughout to ensure as smooth a process as possible.

2. Set a Date

The first thing you should do is set a date for your event. You should choose a date far enough away that you’ll have time to plan. Generally, the larger the event, the more time you’ll want to leave yourself. Be aware of holidays or other events that you may want to plan around as to avoid conflicts and your target attendees already being busy.

3. Make a Budget

Once you have a date, start working on your budget. The most important thing to keep in mind is this: plan your event around your budget, don’t plan your budget around your event. In other words, work with what you have. If you just start spending without thinking about how much you have in pocket, it’ll be easy to go over budget. Account for your most important costs first (like the venue), then move on to the smaller, less-important things to similarly avoid spending too much. It’s always a good idea to leave just a little bit extra in your budget for any unforeseen costs that may pop up.

4. Figure Out Logistics

The biggest logistical thing to figure out is the venue. Make sure the venue you choose suits your needs (for example, it can handle the size of your crowd and any equipment you may need for the event). Ideally, you should look at a few places and compare their costs and included amenities before making a choice. After you know your venue what will be included, start working out the other logistics like food and drink, transportation, parking, sound systems, accessibility accommodations.

5. Advertise Your Event

Now that you have your event planned out, you have to make sure you have people coming to it. Advertise your event and keep track of the responses you get to invitations if you send them out. Activity booking platforms like GoBuddy provide yet another place to list and manage your event as well as software that makes it easy to keep an eye on information like how many people have signed up for your event and to reach out to them with any necessary information.

6. Pay Attention to the Details

While planning out your event, pay attention to the details. Even the smallest of things can be meaningful to your attendees and make the difference between an ok event and a truly memorable one. These small details can be anything from organizational aspects that helped the event run efficiently or entertaining elements that made it really fun.

7. Have a Day-Of Plan

Before your event, make a day-of plan that includes everything from the set up to how you will wrap everything up after the event ends. This day-of plan will help ensure the event runs as smoothly as possible. It should be as detailed as possible and include buffer time to account for any delays as well as breaks for yourself. Have backup plans too in case of unexpected interruptions like bad weather, equipment failure, or cancelations. Everyone working with you on event planning should be able to get in touch with both each other and the suppliers/venue staff for the event. If you can do it, a final walk through a day or so before the event might might also be a good idea

8. Ask for Feedback

After the event, make sure to reach out to the attendees and ask them how they felt about the event. Ask them what worked well, what could have used improvement, and if they have any other suggestions or comments. Giving your attendees a chance to provide feedback will make them feel more appreciated and listened-to, and it is also the most direct way to learn how to improve your events! If you used a platform like GoBuddy, this is an easy way to get in touch with your attendees.

How to stand out in E-commerce

With many businesses providing an online shopping platform for their customers, staying visible in the e-commerce era can become challenging for a lot of companies. Customers are overwhelmed with millions of options and often check out various online stores to receive the best deals.

1) Spend Money to Make Money

Very cliche but very true. When businesses are at their initial stage, they get so engrossed with the idea of success and making profit that they forget that they will continuously need to invest a lot at first to be able to yield rewards in the long term. If you have an online store, know that it’s important to spend on advertising.

2) Become Socially Active

If you are an E-Commerce business, you NEED to be active on all social media platforms- Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Having social media presence really does help with raising awareness about your brands, connecting with potential customers and it is also a great way to answer your customer’s queries! The best thing about using social media to promote yourself is that it is FREE, unless you use different tools like FB/IG ads or sponsoring yourself through them.

3) Showcase your USP (Unique Selling Point) at every chance you get

As an Entrepreneur, it is crucial you know what your USP is and that you’re able to ensure that other people know about it too. Your USP is what makes customers choose you over your competitors. It is something which reflects your brand and sends out a message about why you started this business in the first place. Your USP should focus on your target customers because if it doesn’t, your USP will have no meaning. What is the point of having a unique selling point if it isn’t directed to anyone, right?

Founder Story of HK Momtrepreneurs

About HK Momtrepreneurs

HK Momtrepreneurs is a nonprofit organisation aimed at teaching mothers and families the skill of entrepreneurship and empowering women to achieve and fulfil their career goals while still balancing their families and communities. Recently, we sat down with HK Momtrepreneurs founder Lena Wong to discuss her experiences with the organisation as well as to listen to her advice for aspiring entrepreneurs.

HK Momtrepreneurs Founder Lena Wong

What inspired her to start HK Momtrepreneurs?

When asked what inspired her to start HK Momtrepreneurs, Wong discussed her own experience as a mother looking to start a business. Sought as she might, she couldn’t find a community that provided the support and information she desired. So she decided to start her own Facebook page where she shared the knowledge and wisdom she had acquired. Over time, she started meeting more and more women in similar positions through the page.

From Facebook page to NGO…

Wong wanted to go back to work, but now a mother of two, her outlook on life had changed and she wanted to make a difference in the world. So in late 2018, she transferred the idea of HK Momtrepreneurs from a Facebook page to an official nonprofit organization.

What was the largest issue she faced?

How can a non-profit coexist with entrepreneurship?

In its early stages, Wong remembers HK Momtrepreneur’s largest issue being how people viewed it. It was new, “momtrepreneurs” was a term she had coined, and people often questioned why a nonprofit existed for entrepreneurship. To overcome these issues, Wong explained she simply focused on educating people and sharing what HK Momtrepreneurs stood for. She emphasized all startups, not just hers, face this need to tell society why it needs you.

Wong also expressed gratitude for the support she had received. Among others, she mentioned the encouraging general manager of a coworking space as well as a bank that waived fees for them.

In the past, she explained that HK Momtreprenuers had worked more like a professional organization and less like a typical charity. But in 2020, HK Momtreprenuers launched a fellowship program aimed at expanding the organization’s reach to different socioeconomic classes. She made this addition, recognizing that while starting businesses, women from less fortunate socioeconomic backgrounds often face the same difficulties as wealthier women while also dealing with more challenges. With this fellowship program, Wong feels HK Momtrepreneus now has a more solid base as a nonprofit.

Unforgettable stories…

Transformation of a hesitant mother

When asked about any memorable stories, Wong had two instances to talk about. The first was a full-time mother she met at a networking event. While fairly educated, the woman hadn’t worked for the past twenty years, long enough that she was no longer comfortable in a professional environment and struggled making strong eye contact. She had lost her confidence in meeting strangers. However, she and Wong still clicked and talked for a while. Just a few months later, this woman had opened her own business (a co-creating space with a kitchen and sewing room), and her whole energy had changed. When Wong asked the woman what had led to her dramatic change in personality, the woman explained that it just was the experience of empowering other women to create that had empowered her.

Paths are intertwined

Wong’s second story was about a sleeping coach/consultant who was going to be a speaker at one of HK Momtrepreneurs upcoming events. In the confirmation meeting, the sleeping coach mentioned that the two women had actually briefly crossed paths once before. She had been in the audience of a panel Wong had participated in. The woman had been inspired enough to make a change in her career path and similarly become an entrepreneur. Wong explained this story had stuck with her because that experience of a small moment changing the course of one’s life was familiar to her.

Story between GoBuddy and HK Momtrepreneurs

When asked about things that aided HK Momtrepreneurs’s development, Wong talked about GoBuddy. She met GoBuddy founder Kow at a seminar, and after seeing a demo of GoBuddy’s features, she decided to utilize its services. She explained how happy she was to have the support it provided. For example, HK Momtrepreneurs often hosts events, and registration had always been a hassle. But with GoBuddy, the relatively low-cost registration system now handles the difficult elements for her.

Words for future entrepreneurs

In the close of the interview, Wong imparted a few words of advice. First, she advised all businesses to have diversity. For her business, that means she is working towards including male and female voices, those of parents and those without children. But she emphasized the need for diversity in all its aspects.

She also suggested that those who wish to be entrepreneurs, both men and women, should establish their businesses before having children. Her reasoning is that after having children it takes time to adjust to your new life, and if you run your own business, you can control your reentry to the workforce and gradually settle back in at your own pace.

Wong’s last piece of advice was to work for a big corporation after finishing school befores starting your own business if possible. She explained that doing so provides the chance to explore and understand what work suits you best. Some may find that they are built for the corporate world, and it is also an easier transition from the corporate world to entrepreneurship than the other way around. Starting a business also requires money, so savings from a corporate salary will help pay bills later on. Lastly, job qualifications build your reputation and improve your potential when heading into establishing a business.

From the UK to HK- The Story of EEK

GoBuddy believes everyone could start an online business for free. Our team is dedicated to provide a one-stop cloud platform solution to transform your business. Today we are honoured to have Angela from EEK Limited to talk to us about her entrepreneurial journey!

About EEK

Easy English For Kids (EEK Limited) is a teaching playgroup and a tutorial centre for children that focuses on teaching kids through interactive play. Recently, we had a little chat with the founder of EEK, Angela Comer Lam, to understand more about her business and her experiences in the education industry.

Angela Comer – Lam
Owner of EEK Ltd

What inspired her to start EEK?

When asked what inspired her to start EEK back in 2009, Angela talked about her experience as a local kindergarten english teacher and how she felt that the kids were learning as ‘robots’ and wanted to make learning a fun and interactive experience for the children. This prompted Angela to start her own teaching playgroup where she could teach children in the ways she thought was best for them.

What was the largest obstacle she faced?

Angela expressed her concerns and difficulties when she initially started the playgroup and discussed how quite a few children come from her village in the New Territories and the problem was that parents would send their two to three years old child to Angela’s playgroup for perhaps, a year, and send them to school by the age of three. Since Angela only conducts playgroup with a maximum of seven children so that she is able to give individual attention to every child and they all left after a year to go to school, Angela felt that she had to start over every year and find new children which wasn’t very easy. We asked her how she overcame the challenge and she discussed how it was primarily word-of-mouth. There have been many instances where children leave after the age of three but still take tutoring lessons from her and have continued to take it for a long time now.

Difference in Education between the East and West

Since Angela is from the UK, she discussed with us the major differences in education styles between UK and HK and she explained that the HK education style is similar to how the UK’s education style was back in the 40s/50s- “We teach, you learn.” However, the education style is now more evolved in the UK and they understand that all children learn differently and it is important to cater to every child’s learning style rather than just using one way to teach all of them. In Hong Kong, Chinese is taught in a “drill and kill” way which means children are taught by memorising because there isn’t any other way to teach, however, english is taught in the same way and English does not have to be taught like that. Angela explained that one of the primary things she teaches at her tutorial centre is phonics and she teaches children not only the phonics sound but also how to use it. She further explained that once the children have learnt the 42 phonic sounds, they can read almost anything. In the UK, schools allow more interactive learning and students are allowed to question things rather than just accepting it.

Transformation story of two students

Two of her students (brother and sister) came to her for tutoring lessons when they were in year 5 and year 6 respectively and could only read words they had been taught. They were unable to read words they have never seen before and Angela spent a lot of time and effort on them to ensure they could read everything they were given and much more. Fast forward  a couple years and both of them took their DSE’s last year and are now in college.

Education Business in 2020

We further asked Angela whether she could foresee the education business moving online in 2020 to which she responded that it is not something she wants to go down the route of doing and since her tutorial classes are very personalised and interactive, she does not believe that she would be willing to change her teaching to online lessons.

Story between GoBuddy and EEK

Angela was introduced to GoBuddy by HK Momtrepreneuers Founder, Lena Wong, who encouraged Angela to list some of her products on GoBuddy’s online shop. GoBuddy helped develop Angela’s website and are further planning to help her with marketing. Angela also has a youtube page (Angela’s Story Time) where she reads english story books for children. Apart from EEK, Angela owns an online business y2squared selling accessories like jewellery, hair scrunchies and hand-made handbags.

Any words for Future Entrepreneurs?

When asked if she had any tips for entrepreneurs who would like to start a similar business, she discussed how it is important to research and look for business opportunities in your local community and see if there are any similar businesses in your area. Although most students who come to her tutorial session and playgroups live in the same area as she does (New Territories), there are a few students who come from Hong Kong Island and she believes it is primarily because of word-of-mouth.

Top Business Trends in 2020

It’s a Digital World

With the Covid-19 pandemic disrupting the workforce and forcing many people to work from home, the appearance of a typical business has dramatically changed. And it looks like things might stay changed for a while. Remote work has become the new normal, and since its implementation, its benefits have become apparent. No rent costs make it cheaper for business owners and advancing technology has made communication easy even when workers are apart. Even after the pandemic is over, some companies may keep some positions or certain elements of work remote.

The Growing Gig Economy

Get ready to embrace the gig economy. According to a past Gallup poll, almost 36% of workers were a part of the gig economy, and we can expect that to have risen to around 43% by 2020.Compared to traditional work, gig-economy work is very flexible. This appeals to those trying to make some money on the side and to those who wish to have greater control over their schedule. Moreover, with many businesses unable to hire proper full-time workers considering the Covid-19 economic situation, the demand for part-time gig workers will likely increase. Its easy to see how the gig economy is becoming the new norm during this time.

Increased AI Presence

While AI may not be poised to entirely take over the customer experience, it certainly will be making a bigger appearance this year and may disrupt many business strategies for the better. When effectively combined with and designed to complement employee skills, AI can be utilized to improve business efficiency. AI is growing exponentially in popularity right now because its applications and uses are practically limitless, meaning it can be applied to and empower almost any business. While it may mean some task automation (typically of repetitive and standardized tasks), employers will likely focus on upskilling works than replacing them with AI. AI as a service may also emerge for those who find the cost too high.

Conscious Consumption is King

These days, customers are increasingly conscious and aware of their purchases and what they mean for others and the Earth’s resources. People are placing an ever-growing emphasis on sustainability and responsible consumption. In fact, according to a McKinsey survey, 80% of Gen Z respondents refuse to buy from companies involved in scandals, 70% try to purchase from companies they consider ethical, and 65% try to learn about the origins of the products they buy. Considering these stats, it’s clear that this trend is here to stay. Therefore, in 2020 companies will likely put a greater effort into presenting themselves as (and hopefully actually become) more careful about how their production affects the environment, adamant about advocating for social issues, and motivated in seeking a purpose beyond simply making a profit.

7 Ways Businesses can Maintain a Good Online Presence

There’s no denying that we’re living in a digital age, and that means that a business’s online presence is no longer something they can overlook. A business’s online presence is its overall impact on the internet from its website to its listings to its social media accounts. It also includes the ways people have interacted with the business like reviews and or mentions of it on other websites.

A strong online presence is important because customers are becoming increasingly likely to search for business online and to use search engines to look for products and services before making a decision. In fact, according to one study, 97% of customers look for businesses on the internet. Another survey found that 33% of people used the internet daily to find a local business in the last year. With stats like this, not being online or having a poor presence means countless missed opportunities. Starting to build your business’s online presence may seem intimidating, but with these seven tips, you’ll be on your way to reaching your internet full potential in no time!

1. Have a Website

First things first, make sure your business has its own website. This website will be the foundation of your internet presence as websites are often where customers first find and interact with businesses online. If you want to make a good impression on your potential customers, your website should impress them. Aim to have a clean, intuitive layout, appealing graphics, and a quick loading time. Moreover, your site should load on both mobile and desktop devices.

Once you’ve laid the foundation and created your website, the next step is to make sure it contains valuable information. List your location, business hours, products/services, news or announcements, etc. as to be as informative as possible. If you don’t make it easy for your viewers to find the information they want to know, they’re less likely to give you their business. In addition to providing details about your business, consider posting educational or entertaining content (for example, on a blog) that people may want to share as well. Doing so will spread your brand name.

2. Social Media

Creating your own website is just the start. With the widespread usage of social media,

many businesses have begun to join some platforms as a way of reaching out to new audiences, interacting with their customers, and promoting their goods and services. In general, businesses should prioritize and start with the platforms their customers are active on. However, if you’re uncertain of where to begin, Facebook is usually a solid choice. With 2.6 billion active users, Facebook is the largest social media platform out there and it also has the option to create a Facebook Shop account which can be useful for businesses selling physical items. Instagram and Twitter would be the next most-obvious choices. As you join multiple social media platforms, keep your brand consistent by doing things like posting with a common color scheme and graphic style, promoting the same business values, and displaying a constant personality.

This idea of a business personality is crucial when posting online. One of the main mistakes businesses can make these days is to come across as a faceless corporation; people like seeing business make jokes and interact with other users like friends. Look at your customers and determine what your business’s buyer persona is, then use this information to strategize what kind of content you should share.

3. Be an Online Expert

In addition to social media platforms, businesses can also consider establishing themselves as online experts. Some ways of doing this include posting on your own blog or on forums like Reddit and Quora. Share helpful tips relevant to your industry or respond to people’s questions, and you’ll build your reputation as a credible source and draw positive attention to your business.

4. Be Active

After setting up a website and branching out to other platforms, make sure to keep active

on them! Reflect any business developments (like new hours of operation or product prices changes) on your website, and if you have a blog, post new articles regularly. Additionally, check through your site every now and then to make sure there aren’t any empty pages or dead links that no longer work. Simply creating a good website isn’t enough to make it successful; you have to maintain it. An abandoned site is never a good look, and it can make your business look unprofessional and outdated.

For social media, come up with a realistic posting schedule that your followers can keep track of, and always respond to users who reach out to you quickly. If you don’t get back to customer inquiries on social media, you’ll leave bad impressions. So only join as many social media platforms as you can effectively manage.

5. List Your Website and Pay Attention to Reviews

Another important aspect of a businesses online presence is its listings. Listing your

business on places like Google Businesses and Yelp is both free and helps your business reach a larger audience. As people search online, your listings may show up and lead them to you.

These listings also give people the opportunity to leave reviews. According to one survey, 36% of participants always read reviews of local businesses, 18% do so regularly, and 27% do so occasionally. This means well over half of the population places at least some weight on online reviews, so amassing positive reviews on listing sites can provide a boost for your business. Consider asking your customers to leave reviews to help start this process.

While you’ll strive for mostly good reviews, respond to even the negative ones. Replying to these shows that you listen to all your customers and care about their experiences.

6. Collaborate with Others

Another way to get your business’s name out there is to build relationships with others in your industry. Getting others to post about your business or your collaborations on their own websites, blogs, and social media will generate more mentions of your business online, growing your presence as well as your credibility.

For some businesses, providing influencers with samples of your product or service in exchange for them promoting it can also help you build a larger audience.

7. Modify and Adjust

As you work on developing your online presence, looking at analytics can help you see what is working best and what you need to change. If you’ve been trying to improve your SEO, you can track your search engine results, and if you’ve been attempting to grow an email list, you can track your number of subscribers as well as open and click-through rates. Tools like Google Analytics can prove to be very useful. Simply observe how your stats change as you make adjustments, and continue to modify until you reach your goals
